The Different Types of Energy

Energy is generated from a variety of types of energy. They are transformed into secondary forms such as fuels and electricity, which are then transferred through various channels to supply the energy that powers our homes, industries, and automobiles. Energy sources are classified as renewable and non-renewable.

Renewable (or clean energy) is energy that is produced from natural resources that are continuously replenished. Examples include wind power, solar power, water power and geothermal energy. Fossil Fuels (coal natural gas and oil) are not renewable since they form slower than we utilize them.

Solar energy can be harnessed by one rooftop or in large solar power plants. It can also be transformed into photovoltaic solar energy, which produces electricity directly. Water can be harnessed to produce hydropower, or it can be utilized for tide and wave energy. Geothermal energy is generated by underground reservoirs that contain hot water. Bioenergy is derived from various organic sources, like woody crops or dung from livestock, as well as human wastes.

Renewable energy is not only green but also more affordable than fossil fuels. The issue is that renewable energy requires a huge infrastructure to harvest and transport energy, which can create difficult trade-offs due to economic, social and environmental reasons. The advancement of these technologies continues to grow and they are making strides against traditional fuels. In the long term renewable energy may be more affordable than oil and coal.
